Root Canal Treatment

Endodontic Care in Franklin, Pennsylvania

Sure they sound scary, but with modern techniques root canals can often be completed comfortably.  More importantly, they resolve serious problems — pain, infection or both.  You may be wondering what a root canal is, or why you might need one?  There are two main reasons a tooth may require a root canal: toothache or infection (abscess).  Signs of a possible infection would include pain, swelling, difficulty opening your mouth, pain when chewing, and possibly a fever.  It is important to note that not all dental infections are painful.  A toothache can either occur because of the infection present or because the nerve inside the tooth is inflamed.  This can occur for multiple reasons but is often characterized by lingering pain to stimuli such as hot, cold or sweets.

A root canal can be thought of as a deep filling.  After you are numb, the decay and source of infection is removed.  The canal space that housed the nerve and blood supply to the tooth are cleaned, disinfected and filled.  The tooth can then be saved, and other symptoms are relieved.
